This is the original and real "Aerolotto". Akin to Monty Hall plucking two people from the audience on Lets Make a Deal - in our case, Lets Get the Aircraft off the Ground. There are many perks and benefits to your job, there are also many drawbacks, like how out of 100 passengers, someone is going to be upset. I know a few former FAs who quit because if they stayed any longer they were going to "bash status fliers over the head" with a serving tray for their comments and entitlement.
PS I get the sense that the FF community is not easy to keep happy/can be quite unreasonable and demanding. I once had to be rebooked with a bunch of other elites and SEs who were being rather obnoxious. They all got rebooked, next flight, in economy. I was behind them, flight was not full, but the gate agent thanked me for being pleasant unlike some people, and I ended up in J. You get more with honey than demands when it comes to Air Canada staff. (PS my companions always get upgraded with me during op situations - even post gate control...)
