Is this possible?

Why do they always ask for both id and boarding pass?

What am I missing here?

Or is my step son mistaken?

I guess this question is for all domestic us carriers but I didnt know where on Flyertalk to ask it other than in an airline forum.
I think you might have gotten a couple of things confused. When traveling domestically, if I have already checked in and my app has the boarding pass, I just head directly to security (if I dont have to check in bags). I just carry my driver's license. I am sure thats what many FF who dont check bags do.

TSA will not let someone just pass through the checkpoint without a boarding pass. It is more than likely that your step son has his BP on his phone and forgot to tell you that detail. TSA Cannot pull up your flight information based on your ID card at the security checkpoint.
