Considering I usually buy my tickets weeks/months in advance I don't know why they bother with this. After all, if the transaction was fraudulent it would fail the on-line security check at the time of attempted purchase and no ticket would have been issued. Anyway the ticket does not necessarily have to be paid for by the person who is travelling. In this case are they expected to accompany you to the check-in desk credit card in hand? Of course not. The whole thing is bureaucratic nonsense.
The problem can be if you get some box ticking jobs worth as I once did with an Iberia flight. The credit card I had used to buy the ticket had expired however from the airline's point of view I was still expected to carry it around with me months later. The agent insisted I buy a new ticket with the old one being cancelled and refunded to my expired card/discontinued account number!!
