You have 2 options:

Don't pay the AF, close the account before the bill is due and the fee will be waived.
Do you avoid the fee by closing via SM? I used to churn thru the older versions of these cards and I've never been allowed to close if the AF had posted - always been told I have to pay the AF first. Thanks.
