54 minutes is plenty of time for an AA to AA domestic connection at ORD if your incoming flight is on time. 2265 and 153 will probably both be in the H/K wing of T3.

Personally, I would only check my bag if it was heavy enough to slow me down in case I had a delay and needed to run. If there is a delay of any kind you are obviously taking a risk.
