cws, that is interesting.

Different kettle of fish for ET where the first available row at time of booking might be say 13 on an A320. If you got allocated 13A you'd then have to pay to change it. In which instances booking late (within D-3 when the front rows of ET have just opened up) wouldn't be so bad!
