One data point regarding Massachusetts elevator inspections....
A number of years ago I got stuck in the elevator in my office building on Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. Fortunately I had my cell phone with me. I called the fire department; they came and extracted me.
The elevator certificates all have these words:
In case of accident, please call (617) xxx-xxxx to report it.
or something very similar. So Monday morning I dutifully called.
"Good morning, I'm calling to report an accident in an elevator."
"So what do you want us to do about it?"
"Well, the inspection certificate in the elevator says to call this number in the event of accident."
"OK, you called. Good-bye."
