Unfortunately, that is the way news-gathering/source reporting works. The NYT is probably the most cautious outlet out there. Their source is good, I'd wager. This is not CNN speculating wildly about a black hole.
The problem isn't the quality of the source. My point is that any official investigator should be held to silence rather than give out partial information that can give rise to premature conclusions and speculation. NYT isn't the issue here. It is the blabbermouths inside the investigative team who need to be adults and professional about their job.
