Thank you, AlphaTango --this is helpful. I logged a complaint on the CBP website to bring it to their attention. It makes you wonder how long these new kiosks have been around. The CBP officers at JFK certainly seemed blissfully unaware of the issue.

Pressing the "problem reading document" button is painless though. Just enter the 9 digit card number and you get inserted back into the same process as if the card had scanned.
Is the kiosk expecting a strictly 9-digit card number? Technically, my card number is 13 characters long: "SRC" followed by a 10-digit sequence.
