Thanks, it turns out I can book code shares as long as the flight numbers start with "AA".
So now I'm debating between JFK-LHR-MXP with JFK-LHR on BA F and LHR-MXP on BA intra-Europe J, or the JFK-MXP direct on AA J.
Hmm decisions decisions...
