Unless they were incapacitated physically, they would have some seconds to put on their oxygen masks, which is what they're trained to do.

not automatically. Remember that greek(?) airliner that flew for a few hours on autopilot while everyone on board was unconscious?

No communication may mean that they were working on the problem. I wouldn't speculate or draw conclusions until after we see the report.
