Since I fly mostly UA and Star Carriers, my experience over the years was mostly with US in the whole AA/US scheme of things, although I have flown AA F but that was back in 2005.
So not having not flown AA for quite some time and not used to the pre 9/1 service, I just flew DFWSAN and I found the meal offerings to be pretty adequate and a step above current UA; it was in line with previous experiences on US which far superioer than UA has been for the past couple of years. Service started with warm mixed nuts (not those half cashews on UA) and they came around offering seconds. The wine, a pinot grigio was quite good and the chicken tikka masala had a pretty good flavor, although I'm sure I would tire of it if served it repeatedly. The salad was good but definitely on the small side, and to me cookies shouldn't replace desserts.
That being said, having watched this forum, and knowing my past AA flights, I can understand the frustration especially on midcons. I'm inclined to believe that its an interim solution in that they are trying to standardize meals/glassware/etc across AA and US, before rolling out an improved product. So I would say the current experience is definitely below premerger AA standards, but better than current UA and on par with DL.
