Lack of efficiency is the usual reason for scrapping old planes or expensive maintenance checks coming up, scrapping early 320s/777s is because the sum of individual parts are worth more than a well used aircraft. A318s only a few years old have been scrapped for the same reason - sell for in-demand parts used on 319/320/321.
