I know of several instances where a pax checking in online did not have the passport details to hand, and solved the problem by filling in a random passport number and expiry date. This did not cause any problems whatsoever at the gate or anywhere else.

For a USA-bound flight the passport number needs to match an ESTA record (or have a valid visa in the passport).
