I know of several instances where a pax checking in online did not have the passport details to hand, and solved the problem by filling in a random passport number and expiry date. This did not cause any problems whatsoever at the gate or anywhere else.

I regularly do this for flights to the UK where I enter my passport number (actually it's stored in my profile), but I travel with my national ID card.
