I know of several instances where a pax checking in online did not have the passport details to hand, and solved the problem by filling in a random passport number and expiry date. This did not cause any problems whatsoever at the gate or anywhere else.

If you play this kind of game for a USA-bound flight, I believe you will never board the flight.
