I have been making Gold relatively easily for a few years now, but I think I will just miss this Tier year because I am taking a break from work = fewer business flights.

But I had "excess" Tier points in the last few weeks of the prior year, and there is reason to think I would be OK again in future years (obviously that can't be guaranteed).

With Virgin, years back when I used to be Gold there, they cut me a deal when I missed for a similar reason. I think they extended my Tier points period so that I could qualify.

I suspect BA doesn't feel any need to be flexible. Of course I will probably ask anyway if it looks like it's close .... does anyone have experience on this ?

How many tier points are you likely to be short by ?
