That can be an unfortunate surprise which happened to me before.
If you want to redeem with married segments for XXX-IST-YYY, make sure both XXX-IST and IST-YYY are shown with J when you do a mock booking before payments (but don't pay), don't just check for individual segments, like XXX-IST. Once J availabilities are confirmed, go back and reserve the economy tickets and hold.

J isn't much more expensive than higher fare buckets of Y, especially from Canada to East Asia, it doesn't make sense to book Y, besides comfort level, those status miles are critical for renewal.
Those vouchers do expire at the end of your membership year, I usually redeem them near the end of membership year for traveling in the following membership year period. So plan ahead and don't let them expire.
