You will lose the miles, but once the AS miles post, you should contact AA and ask to have them activated, since the earning activity occurred prior to expiration. If I where you, I'll play it safe and buy something throught the AA portal to create activity now. Also set yourself a reminder for 16 months so that you can repeat this process again in case you do not fly AA a lot.
