Indeed, you sometimes need to resort to 'pain and compliance' methods to make people assume positions to enable basic things like handcuffing. Using zip ties is much more difficult than using rigid handcuffs, and in the hands of those who do not have Police training would not be pleasant.

If your out of your annual ticket on PST (Personal Safety Training) as a Police Officer (this covers everything from restraining, to use of batons,, cuffs, incapacitant spray etc), you are more likely to be in trouble than be restricted to desk duties.
At British Airways we do have ridget handcuffs on all our aircraft, exactly the same type used by the police and annually we go through refresher training in how to use these for pain compliance purposes.
All the trainers taking the training courses have been trained by the police. We use the same methods as used by the police when using these restraint techniques.

We do not use zip ties.
