I also don't want to downplay the safety responsibilities, but "we're primarily here for your safety" is factually incorrect. If that were true cabin crew would spend over 50% of their time on safety related activities...
Agreed on both points. I believe the "our primary duty is safety" claim came about as a combination of a general "everyone a hero or potential hero" move in the last fifteen years, along with a (not incomprehensible) desire by cabin crew to claim better status and respect for what is no longer considered a glamorous, high status job in most Western countries.
