I saw a similar question posted in the AA section, and the answer seemed to be yes. The airline holds onto seats and effectively is able to sell preferred seats more quickly this way. Then they will release the lower cost seats over time.

Is there any way to check the true seat allocation of a flight now that expert flyer no longer gets DL information?
