As for the application itself, you probably only need one copy and one picture, but bringing a second set along is the best way to play it (paper is cheap). I always fill mine out using acrobat because some consulate staff dislike hand printed applications.
Thank you so much for your quick response. I found this information on the consular website as part of their instructions. Perhaps I thought it applied to visas, but may be relevant to passports or other China documents. I'm just a plain ol' tourist.
