Thank you for the clarification, I have transferred our posts from the
Purchase Protection thread to an
Extended Warranty thread. Discussion of the two benefits is often intertwined, so the distinction may be more in the moderator's mind than the content of the threads

.
Looking at this page:
https://www.americanexpress.com/us/c...nty-terms.html
...the only thing that I notice is this oddly worded statement:
Certain purchases are not covered, e.g. items with physical damage, damage as a result of natural disaster, software, motorized devices and vehicles and their parts.
Looking at the actual document:
https://web.aexp-static.com/us/conte...W-DOC-CCSG.pdf
...I think this is a clumsy attempt to summarize this:
Benefits are not payable if the Loss for which
coverage is sought was directly or indirectly,
wholly or partially, contributed to or caused by:
1. any physical damage, including, but not
limited to, damage as a direct result of
natural disaster or a power surge, except to
the extent the original manufacturer's
warranty covers such damage;
I understand this to mean that if a scratch or dent caused the unit to malfunction it wouldn't be covered, but the mere presence of a scratch shouldn't disqualify it from coverage in the event of (for example) a compressor failure.
