Much of the problem is weather, some is infrastructure. UA happens to have two of its major hubs at aging, snow-clogged airports. Pilots dawdling at the gate might be a fun thing to blame, but come on.
Doesn't Mr Silver anticipate your argument about aging northern airports and diminish its importance by highlighting the excellent operational performance of Virgin America who has a large percentage of flights originating or ending in said airports?
