Yes, in the China forum you can find complete discussion of this topic. It's called Travel Without Visa (TWOV) and applies if you're just transiting China to a third country (or HKG). But, speaking from personal experience, it's a bit of a hassle. And now with 10 year China visas, it doesn't really make any sense to do unless you REALLY want to go elsewhere. Your onward transport is going to cost more than the visa, anyway.
