I get a nice CSR who listened to my story and says "You sound like a gentleman and a scholar. I believe you, I'll cancel the ticket and refund the money." Now, the ticket is gone from .com, though I'm not convinced I will actually see the refund. My learning is NEVER trust the website to do the cancellation, despite what some here may say. I had somewhat of a similar problem yesterday. Made a reservation and then realized I had chosen wrong dates. After ticketing and then cancelling within about 5 minutes, got message that value could be used on future ticket (???). Wasn't given refund option. I found the reservation remnants under the "Inactive" tab in reservations. When I tried to change flights, a $200 change fee was required. Ended up calling reservation and booked new flights. Rep said system was still trying to assess the change fee, but she waived that, seeing that original reservation had been booked less than an hour before.
The reservation still is under the "Inactive" tab. The ticket looks good and I can change seats and everything, so I assume it won't be a problem....or should I call?
