Whatever the answer is, how useful would this answer be for a flight in the future?

It would not surprise me that they do hide seats.
But I know for sure that there are plenty of other reasons that explain why seats do open up the day of or at T-24.

While in this case seats opened up, in other flights, no seats will open up. If you did not buy your better seat and got stuck in the middle you would regret not having pulled the triger for a preferred or MCE seat.
