The A-fare, was that a UA codeshare A fare or an AC A fare? Two very different fares classes as others have explained. Typicallu when booking via UA, you will be booking a codeshare fare class not the flight operator's fare class. In the end what matters is the flight operator's fare class and only the flight operator can tell you that. This is one of the fundamental issues with codeshare.
