The SEPTA conductor gives you a punched paper ticket on board the train, which also acts as a receipt (cash fare paid will be punched out in one section). Tell them that you need your receipt and they (might) be careful and punch the ticket neatly. The same paper form acts as a receipt if you are buying a pass onboard, but you'll need to ask.
