He can telephone and ask to be offloaded from the flight, and then check in again
He can check in again at the check in desk. This is what I would do.
No reason why he cannot do it airside either, I think, but not totally sure on the Crowne lounge situation, presumably the staff can handle that but never had cause to do anything difficult with them so cannot speak from experience.
