While checking the seat maps multiple times a week will certainly drive you crazy, I think NOT checking the seat maps til a few days before departure is equally as ill advised. There are FREQUENT posts here of seats being changed involuntarily or disappearing all together. If you wait til a few days before to check the seat map, and your seat has been moved to a cr@ppy one, it'll likely be too late to change it to something decent.
