At this size , what you saw is no gecko , likely a monitor lizard !

You see these or similar at Pulo too , at Wana , on Moyo they are more like protected ' pets ' there , just don ' t disturb them . Marine reserve & such ..
As posters have mentioned , these are the tropics and such creatures keep the Eco balance . The smaller ones like geckos etc take care of insects while the larger ones , the rodents & what nots
