My comment was based on the initial suggestion from the OP to call the airline and ask for an exception.
I personally wish the OP luck and think it's a shame of how this whole thing works. If there wasn't such a fuss made about this sort of thing, OP could call up the airline in advance and say he doesn't need that particular flight and the airline could actually re-sell that seat.
