Hazard surrounding checkpoint x-rays that have very short conveyor belts?

The carryon luggage scanners at some airports (cough cough DTW) have very short conveyor belts that lead into the x-ray. I usually travel with a very small, lightweight backpack so I have to nearly reach inside the scanner to get my bag moving on the belt. Isn't this a health hazard?

I try to stay as far away from the scanner as possible and I'm sometimes admonished by TSA to "push my bag in because it's not going to go in by itself"
