According to ExpertFlyer most seats on this flight are blocked rather than occupied. If you try dummy booking on lufthansa.com and display the seat map only some seats right at the back are available for selection. I agree with cdn1 that it's not worth paying for a seat you will end up in anyway.

I suggest you check in online at T-23 or earlier (especially if you have a connecting flight) and select a seat.
