there are fast trains in Spain, but the line to Portugal isn't one of them! The joy of the Madrid Lisbon connection is that it's an overnight journey, giving you the potential of a full day in in the Portuguese capital and saving on two nights hotel accommodation

Fares are not too expensive (at least for basic tickets).

You could get to many places in Spain, and back within a day, from Madrid. But perhaps it would be more practical to stick to places close by, such as Toledo (30 minutes).
