Perhaps the thread title "Tricks to getting complimentary upgrade as Plat on AA" and the OP's own words: "I've heard there are tricks but what are they?....I have no coupons and don't want to pay out of pocket" might be why subsequent posters have been focused on "tricks" as opposed to explaining the rules.
