If you can wait the 72 hours it takes to release/process an online gift card, I'd have one traveler purchase an AA gift card for the exact amount of their fare and then have the other book using their credit card and gift card. The only catch is you may lose whatever travel insurance protection your credit card offers, assuming it offers such protection, and assuming such protection is only available when 100% of the trip is purchased on said card.
