Seriously? What would that have accomplished? Who knows when they would've arrived at their destination and the chance of booking a lie-flat seat on another airline, with such short notice, would be slim to none and insanely expensive. This is completely unreasonable.
They should have been offered the chance. Whether or not it would have done them any good is a different issue; there are people for whom the extra cost would not have mattered nearly as much as being rested on their arrival.
