Note that by law (which CBP routinely violates) a green card holder only has to present a green card. Not a passport.
Correct on all counts, I believe. My wife did try to use her passport the first time she had her green card, and IIrC, it told her to use her Greencard, but then actually let her use it in the kiosk. This was in YVR pre-clearance ~Nov. 2012, I think.

Once it can't read a doc, it has the problem reading document? Button. I've only had to use it once but don't recall the passID option, remember it asking for other info. like full name and flight info, and perhaps passport (or Greencard) #, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't PassID.
