Four reconstructive surgeries, including the hip replacement and one exploratory surgery when they figured out he needs far more specialized care. Interestingly, the ball on his femur connecting to his hip sheared right off. ETA: if he was alive today, he would have needed to go in for at least one more revision surgery to his wrist and one to his hip.

Recovery took years and he never fully recovered. His hand and wrist still had bones sticking out in awkward places where they figured it was better to leave it be becuase moving it risked significant nerve damage.

He was lucky to have survived and it was a miracle that he didn't have a more serious spinal fracture. If he wasn't retired already at the time of the accident, he would have been forced to retire and he would have qualified for permanent disability very easily.

People who think falling 20ft will only result in a "few broken bones" have no clue. No clue at all.
