The logic is that Amex and Delta made a deal that the certificates could only be used to give away seats when DL is otherwise selling them for cheap. Think of it another way: If an electronics store were doing a BOGO offer on television sets, is it more likely they'll do that with a $300 set or a $5000 set?

And I think it's pretty well documented here that the Amex certs are valid for LUTXV fares for Platinum, and AGIZLUTXV for Reserve. DL/Amex failed to update their T&Cs when they added the XV fare classes and converted GZ from upgrade buckets to deep-discounted first/biz classes, and apparently still have not.
