All this discussion of landing and take-off weight aside, the aircraft likely had some particularly heavy cargo onboard or was loaded with too much fuel. In any weather, the aircraft loaded with the appropriate amount of fuel for trip, plus a full complement of passengers/luggage, should be able to make an ORD-DEN flight.
