Not correct. You are supposed to "follow crew instructions". It's actually illegal not to follow crew instructions, or so they say.
This wasn't a "fiery crash" where the airplane broke into pieces. The crew made the right decision to evaluate the situation and then ordered the evac at the safest exit. That situation would have been much worse had they just started jumping into the icy water. It's not clear from the pictures if they could have gotten out of the water quickly. That bulkhead probably was specifically designed to keep people from climbing on it.
Reports I've seen were that the fuel leak was less than 1 gallon per minute. That's not a major leak. If they were able to safely shutdown the engines, and there was no indication of fire, they made the smart move by finding the best evacuation point as opposed to the fastest.
I wondered why they didn't use the tail, but the angle it was sitting at might have inhibited it from opening properly. It also possible with the way the airplane piked on the wall that the forward doors may not have worked depending on how the frame was stressed.
