The picture shows the left side over-wing exits closed. Either it was too soon after the incident for them to be open, or indeed it confirms that something (presumably major damage or fuel spill) caused the crew to choose to leave them closed.
According to one of the first responders, the left side wing punctured and was dropping fuel. This would seem to make sense with the photo. Right side wing looked like it was mangled too. Wings can be repaired, but that photo makes it look like the plane's spine may be sagging too. If that's the case, Delta's MD-88 fleet would likely drop by one. But hard to tell at this point.
