I flew YYC-YYZ 70 times in 2011.
If you wanted an upgrade to the front, you pretty much needed to be either an SE, or an E flying on flight passes. I did the two pass thing (One latitude, One booking into M), and was succesful upgrading on all but one flight.
From time to time I would do last minute upgrades when it made sense. The common amount at the time was $399 or something like that, but I did see some LMU's as high as $1599.
Cabin ALWAYS went out full both ways. I remember asking the gate agents a few times the percentage of Elite's and higher on the flight and was often quoted 50%. Kinda crazy!
