Once somebody actually appeared from the back of the plane and suddenly plonked themselves onto the middle seat. I believe that they had a tight connection and had managed to negotiate a better place for themselves with the crew. I was a little annoyed that the extra space had been taken, but as I hadn't paid for the space I couldn't complain.
