Well technically, it's not entirely automatic. To get PreCheck they have to enter the DOD ID# on the back on their CAC (military ID) card. Otherwise, no PreCheck.
It is automatic, once they show that they're actually part of the military (by entering the number). Otherwise, TSA doesn't know in advance that they're military.

Nitpicking aside, the point stands: there's zero reason to believe that active duty military present less of a threat to aviation safety than a random member of the population.
