Join a few car-rental's rewards programs too. You'll get periodic emails with special promotions for sales, double points, etc. I always put off my renting until last and I keep an eye on my emails so I can rent with whoever gives me the best perks. Double points, 15% off, etc. in addition to the 2x points.
